What is counseling?

Counseling is a professional confidential process that helps individuals explore and resolve personal, emotional or psychological issues.

How do I know if I need counseling?

You might need counseling if any of the following affect your quality of life:

Stress, anxiety or depression

Challenges in a relationship (spouse, parent, friend, partner, etc )

Difficulty coping with a major life change

Problems with substances or destructive behaviors

Feeling stuck or overwhelmed

What happens during a counseling session?

At your first appointment you will meet with a licensed professional and discuss your concerns, the history of those concerns, and your goals for counseling. Subsequent visits will focus on strategies and techniques designed to help you meet your goals. Counseling is collaborative and you are an active participant during each visit.

How long does counseling take?

It varies. You will develop a plan with your counselor and determine the best time frame based on your needs. Many people work with a counselor for a short period of time, six months or less. While others may work with a counselor for an extended period of time with varied frequency.

What if I need medication?

While a licensed counselor cannot prescribe medication they may be able to refer you to a medical provider who can evaluate your symptoms and determine the best treatment protocol.
